The world is in a phase of radical change and the framework conditions in security policy are changing rapidly. Consequently, the Bundeswehr and the Federal Government find themselves facing profound challenges that require strategically well-founded answers. In future the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College (BwCSC) and the Helmut Schmidt Bundeswehr University (HSU) in Hamburg will be tasked to make active contributions in this field. Alongside its central role of providing initial, follow-on and advanced training to top-level Bundeswehr personnel, the BwCSC will also perform the function of a strategic think tank in the future.
To this end the German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies—GIDS was founded as a think tank based on cooperation between the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College and the Helmut Schmidt Bundeswehr University.
Being the core element of the think tank, the GIDS follows a research-based approach and examines strategic issues from a security and defence policy perspective that is focused on the future. By doing so, it lays the foundation for providing proper advice to the decision-makers in the Bundeswehr and the Federal Government.
Essential elements of the research, study and consulting activities of the GIDS are excellent basic research, critical advice and an open-minded discourse.
