This #GIDSresearch argues that the maritime domain may provide opportunity for cooperation without the sacrifice of norms and values. It aims to examine underlying motivations and drivers that influence China’s approach towards the maritime domain with regard to the military, legal and political dimension. The last section of this paper also provides some examples of how such a policy approach could be implemented.
