See, Land, Geld und Waffen

GIDSanalysis Nr. 7 mit dem Titel „See, Land, Geld und Waffen“ ist der dritte Band in der Serie, der herausragende Abschlussarbeiten aus dem berufsqualifizierenden weiterbildenden Masterstudiengang „Militärische Führung und Internationale Sicherheit“ vereinigt. In diesem Band untersucht Pierre-Louis Josselin die Frage, ob und wie weit A.T. Mahans Konzeption der Seemacht, entwickelt für die Lage an der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert., zu den Verhältnissen im 21. Jahrhundert passt.

An Enquiry Into Linear Conflict Models

This monograph generalises, and extends, the classic dynamic models in conflict analysis (Lanchester 1916, Richardson 1919, Boulding 1962). Restrictions on parameters are relaxed to account for alliances and for peacekeeping. Incrementalist as well as stochastic versions of the model are reviewed. These extensions allow for a rich variety of patterns of dynamic conflict. Using Monte Carlo techniques as well as time series analyses based on GDELT data (for the Ethiopian-Eritreian war, 1998–2000), we also assess the empirical usefulness of the model. It turns out that linear dynamic models capture selected phases of the conflict quite well, offering a potential taxonomy for conflict dynamics. We also discuss a method for introducing a modicum of (bounded) rationality into models from this tradition.

What Strategic Wargaming Can Teach Us

Bismarck famously said that it is better to learn from the experience of others than from one’s own real world mistakes. Wargaming offers a vicarious source of this precious experience, and this leads to the suggestion that there are no losers in wargames – only winners and learners. Wargames can save lives and livelihoods by offering a safe to fail experimental environment, whose vicarious insights can help us to avoid or minimise real world conflicts or to limit losses and maximise gains should conflicts occur.

Am 11. März findet das „10. Forum Zukunftsorientierte Steuerung” statt. Das Thema des diesjährigen Forums “Strategische Entscheidungen mit Simulationen fundiert treffen” wird aus den Perspektiven Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Militär beleuchtet. Einen Blick auf die militärische Herangehensweise durch Simulationen, genauer gesagt Wargames, eröffnet der emeritierte Professor Philip Sabin, britischer Militärhistoriker am Institut für Strategische Studien des King`s College in London.
